Community Choirs
Bucks County Choral Society — Based in Doylestown, this 80-voice auditioned symphonic choir has been a leading ensemble in the greater Philadelphia area since 1973. They perform an annual four-program series, often in partnership with professional orchestras, and hold auditions with openings in all voice parts. Weekly Tuesday night rehearsals run from September through June at Lenape Valley Church in New Britain.
Cantus Novus — An auditioned chamber choir based in Bucks County, known for a "roots and wings" repertoire that spans Renaissance motets to contemporary composers. A great fit for singers who want a smaller, tightly blended ensemble experience.
Pennsbury Community Chorus — Now in its 25th year, this Bucks County ensemble of more than 75 singers performs a diverse choral repertoire, often with guest soloists. A welcoming option for singers who want a strong community feel alongside solid musicianship.
Bucks County Women's Chorus — An ensemble of singers from all backgrounds and experience levels, from lifelong performers to people returning to singing after decades away. They've performed everywhere from Pearl S. Buck International to the White House Holiday Open House, and they tour internationally.
Bucks County Singers — Rehearsing Tuesday evenings in Newtown, this 30-plus member choir just celebrated its 40th anniversary. No audition required, which makes it an especially approachable entry point if group singing is new to you.
The PYC (Pennsylvania Youth Chorale) — For young singers in grades 2 through 8, based across Bucks and Montgomery counties. A strong option if you're a teacher or parent looking for a serious choral home for a student.
Theaters and Places to Perform
Bucks County Playhouse (New Hope) — One of the most storied regional theaters in the country, producing Broadway-caliber musicals and plays with paid, professional-track auditions. Their casting calls are worth watching closely if you're building a music theater résumé.
Town and Country Players (Buckingham Township) — A community theater with 75 years of history in Central Bucks, staging a mix of musicals, comedies, and dramas each season in a converted 18th-century barn.
ActorsNET of Bucks County (Morrisville) — Actor-driven and volunteer-run, with open auditions and no experience required. A genuinely welcoming place to try musical or dramatic theater for the first time.
Montgomery Theater (Souderton) — A professional-caliber theater right in the heart of Montgomery County, with main stage musical and play productions and auditions open to actors including younger performers ages 12 to 18.
BACT (Bucks-Alliance Community Theater) — An all-volunteer group performing two productions a year at the Mitchell Performing Arts Center, right on the Bucks/Montgomery line.
Gypsy Stage Company (Quakertown) — Performing original musicals and plays by local Bucks County writers at McCoole's Arts and Events Place in Quakertown.
Public Schools With Standout Music Programs
You don't have to leave the public school system to find a serious music education around here. A few districts in particular have built music programs that punch well above their weight.
New Hope-Solebury School District maintains a strong band, orchestra, and choir program, with students performing both locally and on tour, including trips to Carnegie Hall and Hawaii.
Pennridge School District offers a full program spanning concert, symphonic, and jazz bands, orchestral ensembles, and rock music, taught by experienced educators with advanced credentials, with select ensembles requiring audition.
Neshaminy School District offers a wide arts spectrum that includes jazz band, concert choir, dramatics, and color guard, giving students plenty of room to explore music alongside other creative disciplines.
Beyond individual districts, most Bucks and Montgomery County public schools fall under PMEA District 11, part of the statewide Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, which runs District, Region, and All-State honors ensembles for band, orchestra, and choir, giving serious student musicians a chance to perform alongside top peers from across the region. The Bucks County Symphony Orchestra also partners closely with local schools, presenting an annual Family Concert that features student musicians from area elementary and middle schools.
A Few Notes Before You Audition
Most of these groups list clear expectations on their websites, but a few things are worth preparing regardless of where you're headed. Community choirs like Bucks County Singers or Pennsbury Community Chorus often welcome singers without a formal audition, while ensembles like Bucks County Choral Society and Cantus Novus expect solid music reading skills and prior choral experience. Theater auditions almost always ask for a prepared 16 to 32 bar cut of a song in the style of the show, so having a few pieces polished and ready in your back pocket makes a real difference when an audition notice appears with only a few weeks' notice.
